Tutorial #1

how to use textures

Step One:

Choose a picture to work with and paste it.

It seemed too dark so I pasted it again and set the top layer (2) to screen

Step Two:

Get a texture you like, I chose this one.

paste it into the picture. Then I changed the layer/blending mode to saturation.

I pasted it again and set it to screen and put a gaussian blur to it (on top, filter>blur>gaussian blur).

Step Three:

I used another texture

and pasted it on top and set it to overlay.

Step Four:

I am just about done, so i went to flatten the image(layer>flatten image).

I wanted to adjust the colors so used color balance (image>adjust>color balance or simply CTRL+B).

Step Five:

I decided to use another texture.

I pasted it, rotated it (edit > transform > rotate 180) and set it to multiply.

Next, I right clicked the bottom background layer and chose duplicate, I then dragged the layer on top of the layer one and set it to softlight.

I'm pretty satisfied with how it looks so I'll just stop and flatten. Do not just follow these steps because that's how I did it, it's just an example. There is no "right" way to use textures. You can pick different blending/layer modes, change the opacity, erase parts of it, move them around and much more.
