detailed layer masking

This is not exactly a tutorial, just examples to help you understand layer masking more. In Tutorial #4 I said, "White is what is shown, Black is what is hidden." So on our way we go. First press the layer you want to apply it to, then press the layer mask button here. Always make sure what you're working on, if it shows the paintbrush like before, that is the actual layer, if it shows the mask icon, it's the layer mask. Another way is to look at where is the thicker black border. click

I took a black paintbrush and made a line on the right, now my background shows. click

Example Two
Back to orignial, I made a black blury border to my layer mask. Look at the layer mask and the result. Also notice that the picture is not altered. click
